While other drivers are ditching their familiar open-wheel racing mounts for the lure of stock-car racing, Rob Bunker is bucking the trend. After manhandling horsepower in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, he will return to compete in a Star Mazda Championship race this week. He hopes the skills he has acquired in the heavier, higher-horsepower stock car will boost his performance in a nimble Pro Formula Mazda car.

Rob Bunker came from behind three times to post a 12th-place finish in the ARCA REMAX Series race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., on Saturday – a race that was one of the toughest of his career. After chasing an optimum setup in the No. 4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger, Bunker and the Cunningham Motorsports crew found the right combination for race day, enabling the Bridgewater, N.J., driver to mount strong charges after each of his three pitstops.

Rob Bunker has done a lot of preparation for the upcoming event this weekend at Pocono in the Pocono 200. A standout in open wheel racing, Rob Bunker will be racing on a track which is more to his style of racing. Cunningham Motorsports and Rob are looking to make great strides this weekend racing on what is a “Road Course Oval”. This is a great opportunity for the entire team to rebound after some bad luck at the beginning of the year. Rob will be piloting the #21 Dodge Charger this weekend in conjunction with Jack Bowsher and associates.

Rob Bunker’s weekend was short lived when a misfortune on lap 115 relegated the #4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger to a 32nd place finish in the Hantz Group 200. Cunningham Motorsports is a Dodge Development driver team and Rob has made a lot of progress since the beginning of the year. The weekend was filled with its share of thrills and Rob was none too happy with the outcome. The Cunningham Motorsports Team was on track for a good finish until an impatient competitor took it upon himself to push Bunker aside which created havoc for the whole team and put the #4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger in the garage.

Rob Bunker will be back behind the wheel of the #4 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge Charger this weekend in Toledo. Cunningham Motorsports is a Dodge Development team and Rob shares the driving responsibilities with a few other drivers. This will be Bunker’s weekend to shine and prove what kind of racecar driver he is becoming. Shifting from the open wheel ranks, Bunker has had a great deal of obstacles to overcome in the stock cars. “The cars, the drivers, and the entire process of stock car racing have been a learning experience for me. Every race I learn something new and I am beginning to find more comfort and confidence each time I get behind the wheel of the #4 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge Charger,” explained Bunker.

Winchester Speedway proved to be an exciting race for Rob Bunker and his #4 Dodge Development-Cunningham Motorsports team. Rob qualified 17th for the Winchester ARCA 200 and had high hopes of racing his way to the front. Those hopes were demolished on the first lap when Bunker spun right into the path of veteran ARCA driver, Mike Harmon. Battling a torn up racecar, Rob would fight his was back to a 24th place finish. At times after the crash Rob was running laps times as fast as the leaders. This was definitely a learning experience for Rob Bunker. Learning how to climb back from the bottom of the barrel after being involved in a wreck is a great lesson for all developed racecar drivers to learn. Bunker is still learning and has extraordinary expectations for himself in the future.

This will be Rob Bunker’s first trip to the ½-mile, high-banked oval track of Winchester Speedway. Behind the wheel of the #4 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge Charger, Rob hopes to accomplish two things this weekend: “finish the race and be on the lead lap when the race is over”. This is Bunker’s first year in the ARCA/REMAX Series and he is still adjusting to the cars. Moving from an open wheeled car into a stock car has definitely been a challenge for Bunker. With a little more seat time under his belt, Rob has the potential of becoming a polished stock car racer.

For me, 2006 was a lot about becoming a more professional young driver. I spent time being interviewed, talking firsthand with team owners, signing autographs and, of course, reporting on each of my events. Ian Willis and the rest of AIM Autosport really helped me understand the general setup of a formula car and the finer points of driving one. We made sure my voice was heard and I spent a lot of time talking to Ian about setup, as well as making plans for when I was on track. Time management was a huge deal because there were just so many events, but my team and I always had a clear goal for every session.

Rob Bunker made good use of his six-week hiatus between Formula BMW USA races. The Bridgewater, N.J., driver isolated and honed elements of his performance in two race cars – his No. 18 AIM Autosport Formula BMW FB2 and a higher-horsepower Formula Renault 2000. He worked on driving styles such as acceleration into and out of a turn, maintaining momentum and focused corner entry or exit speed.
